Hats, Fans, Bustles & Bows

The Fayetteville Free Library presents a Women's History Month Tea: A vintage clothing presentation on the role of women in 19th century society on Thursday, March 20 at 2pm. The program will not only be informative, but also entertaining and interactive. Please call 637-6374 to register.

"Hats, Fans, Bustles and Bows", presented by Mary Jean Bialas of Victorian Whispers, allows the audience to enter the dressing rooms of four distinctly unique women. Each of these women is from a different social class during the Victorian Period. Audience members become part of the program as each woman dresses and prepares to start her day. The scullery maid, the serving maid, the young maiden, and the wife of an industrialist clearly have separate daily concerns, different social expectations, duties, and restrictions. This audience-interactive program deals with the fashions of the time period between 1858-1901 and reflects New York State History.

Irish Dance Performance

The Johnston School of Irish Dance will perform at the Fayetteville Free Library on Sunday, March 9th at 2pm. The event is part of the 2007-2008 Motto Musicale Series. The performance will be followed by a live Irish music "seisiun". The Sunday Musicale Series is sponsored by the Motto Sheet Music Collection and the Friends of the Fayetteville Free Library.

Founded in 1993 by Ann Johnston, the Johnston School of Irish Dance is instructed by Ann Johnston-Sullivan and Patty Wilsch, both certified teachers of Irish Dance. Classes are held in Syracuse, Fayetteville, Watertown, and Utica. The dancers enjoy performing throughout the area year round and competing locally, nationally and internationally. At the end of March, two girls from the Syracuse Class, Colleen Byrnes & Molly Francis and one girl from the Watertown class, Merry Jo Devine, will be traveling to Belfast, Ireland to represent the school in the World Championships.

New beginners are always welcome and there is also a class for adults. Those who are interested are asked to contact Patty @ pewilsch@hotmail.com. All of the dancers are very proud of their heritage and enjoy sharing their love of the dance with the community.
